Although often confused, ecommerce and digital marketing are not the same.
Definitions of Ecommerce and Digital Marketing
What is Ecommerce?
Ecommerce is the actual trading of goods and services via electronic channels. Or, in other words, ecommerce is your sales process.
What is Digital Marketing?
Digital Marketing is the process of reaching your audience via digital channels and bringing them to the point of sale
When you order a pair of shoes from a website, the process of ordering and delivery is ecommerce. But the way you’ve gotten to that website (via a paid or unpaid digital channel like a google ad), is digital marketing.
Ecommerce vs Digital Marketing Real Life Example
You could drive thousands of visitors to your website via digital marketing, but if only 2 of them convert, you may want to revisit your ecommerce strategy.
And the other way around, your ecommerce process could be the easiest and most straightforward one, but if only 3 people a month visit your website, you may want to take a look at your digital marketing performance.
Knowing the difference between the two will enable you to identify where you need to make improvements in your business: getting people to your brand and website via digital marketing, or selling to them via ecommerce.
